Group Chalet Cost Calculator: How to Split a Laurentides Chalet Rental Fairly

Short answer: add up every shared cost of the trip (rent, cleaning fee, booking fees and taxes, groceries, shared activities), then divide by the number of people. Divide again by the number of nights to compare the chalet with a hotel. The calculator below does it in seconds.

The formula

  • Lodging total = rent + cleaning fee + booking fees and taxes
  • Total trip cost = lodging total + groceries + other shared costs
  • Cost per person = total trip cost ÷ number of people
  • Cost per person per night = cost per person ÷ number of nights

The per-person-per-night figure is the most useful number to compare a chalet with a hotel room, because it puts both on the same scale whatever the length of the stay.

Worked example

ItemAmount
Rent for 3 nights$1,500
Cleaning fee$200
Booking fees and taxes$150
Groceries$400
Total$2,250
Per person (6 people)$375
Per person per night (3 nights)$125

These numbers are only an illustration, not a market price. Real rates depend on the season, the size of the chalet, the location and amenities such as a spa or lake access.

How to split fairly when situations differ

An equal split is simple, but it is not always fair. Agree on the rules before booking to avoid tension during the trip.

Split by bedroom

When couples get private rooms and singles share or sleep on a sofa bed, divide the lodging cost by bedroom instead of by person. A common approach is to give the master suite a slightly higher share and the bunk room a lower one.

Split by nights

If someone arrives a day late, count person-nights. Multiply each person’s nights, add them up, and divide the lodging cost by that total to get a price per person-night. Groceries can follow the same logic.

Children and non-drinkers

Many groups count children as half a share for food, and keep alcohol on a separate tab paid only by those who drink.

Practical tips for group bookings

  • Collect each person’s share of the deposit before you book, so one person does not carry the risk alone.
  • Read the cancellation policy together and decide what happens if someone drops out.
  • Check the maximum occupancy: going over it can break the rental agreement.
  • In Quebec, legitimate short-term rentals must display a registration number; see our winter chalet rental guide for what to check.
  • Keep receipts for groceries and shared purchases in one shared note.

FAQ

Is renting a chalet cheaper than a hotel for a group?

Often for groups of four or more, especially if you cook. Compare the per-person-per-night cost of both options with this calculator.

Should the cleaning fee be split equally?

Usually yes, since everyone benefits from the clean chalet. Include it in the lodging total.

What if someone cancels after booking?

Agree in advance. Many groups ask the person who cancels to pay their share unless they find a replacement.

Does the calculator save my data?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
